A MESSAGE FROM THE NJROTC INSTRUCTORS:

       The First Sergeant and I firmly believe our program offers fun and adventure, while providing an interesting avenue for your students to realize their true potential.  NJROTC provides an excellent means to develop self-discipline, exercise leadership skills, and build pride in country and community.  Upperclass cadets are given opportunities to assume positions of increasing responsibility in the administration and command of the unit.  First year students are encouraged to participate in unit activities in order to prepare themselves for leadership roles.  We and the cadet staff are prepared to help any of our students in any aspect of the program, whether academic, military, or physical readiness.

       JROTC is an elective.  Students should not be enrolled in JROTC unless they request it. Making that request is a commitment to abide by Navy JROTC standards of conduct and comply with Navy uniform and grooming requirements. Students unwilling to make that commitment will not enjoy the class and they will fail the course.  Uniforms must be worn, generally once per week, and all cadets are required to comply with US Navy grooming regulations.  A complete NJROTC uniform is issued to each cadet at no cost and must be returned upon disenrollment.

          In the Providence NJROTC program, our goal is to help all cadets prepare for success after graduation.  JROTC is not a military recruiting program; only a small percentage of cadets will enter the military after graduation.  Because NJROTC provides an opportunity for positions of leadership and responsibility, community service, and athletics, it can provide a significant boost to any student’s resume.  Our graduates are currently serving with honor in the armed forces but they are also in completing undergraduate and post-graduate studies at universities, working in a wide variety of professions, and raising families.

        JROTC is a leadership program; it is NOT a “boot camp”. Students who are a discipline problem in a regular classroom will likely fail when placed in a class that makes more stringent demands regarding behavior and appearance.  The Navy JROTC academic syllabus includes Navy orientation, history, geography, government, law, college and financial education, ethics and leadership.  Essays and class presentations are required, as is participation in physical fitness training.

 

       JROTC extracurricular activities include sports and academic teams, a drill team and rifle team, military ball, community service events, and field trips to military installations throughout the southeast United States.  All extracurricular activities are voluntary and a privilege that must be earned through appropriate conduct and satisfactory school work.  There is a fee charged for field trips and the military ball.  Participation is encouraged but not required by the class; however, it is mandatory for promotion within the cadet rank structure.  All cadets are encouraged to also participate in non-NJROTC extra-curricular activities, such as varsity sports, clubs, and the arts.

        Students transferring from other programs retain their ribbons and other awards but must complete the Providence NJROTC Professional Advancement Requirements to regain any previously held rank.
